June DAP Course Wrap-Up

What a cracking day out for our latest Driver Awareness Program. The weather kept us honest with grey skies overhead and plenty of moisture in the ground, which turned out to be exactly the sort of conditions that make a training day worthwhile. Slippery tracks, soft ground and a bit of greasy clay are the best teachers going around, and the bush was looking lush and green for it.

We had a great spread of vehicles roll up for the day. Andreas brought the Patrol, Michelle was in the Land Cruiser, Adrian had the Ranger, Linda fronted up in the MU-X, Kayla rounded out the trainee group in the D-Max, and Jeff and Meg joined us in their Ranger to make for a solid convoy.

 

 

 

 

Our advisors did a top job sharing their knowledge and keeping everyone safe through the trickier sections. Big thanks to Sel, Shane, Heather and Chris for giving up their time and patience, and a special mention to Chris Gregg who came along as a trainee advisor and got stuck into the learning from the other side of the fence.

 

The day moved through the usual mix of theory and hands-on driving. We covered track assessment, line selection, controlled descents and the importance of walking a section before committing to it. There's nothing like standing in the ruts and reading the ground with the group before anyone touches a steering wheel, and the advisors made sure everyone understood the why behind each technique rather than just following along.

Watching the trainees grow in confidence across the day is always the best part. By the afternoon the group was reading terrain, picking their lines and handling the slippery climbs and descents with a lot more composure than they started with. That's exactly what the DAP is all about.
