IMG_20240915_134452340 (1).jpgThe Driver Awareness Programme, or DAP, is the Gold Coast 4WD Club’s structured training programme designed to help members become safe, capable, and confident 4WD drivers.

It is one of the most important things we offer as a club, and something we strongly encourage all members to complete, regardless of prior experience.

Whether you’re completely new to 4WD or have been driving for years, the DAP provides practical knowledge, hands-on experience, and a deeper understanding of how to safely operate your vehicle in real off-road conditions.

Why the DAP Exists

Four wheel driving opens up access to incredible places, but it also comes with responsibilities and risks. The DAP exists to ensure that members:

• Drive safely and confidently
• Understand their vehicle and its capabilities
• Avoid unnecessary vehicle damage
• Protect the environment
• Look after themselves and others on trips
• Are prepared for real-world situations

It also ensures that all club drivers operate to a consistent standard, which improves safety and enjoyment for everyone on club trips.

What You Will Learn

The DAP covers both theory and practical skills, including:

Vehicle fundamentals

• Understanding 4WD systems (high range vs low range)
• When and how to use low range
• Traction and vehicle control
• Ground clearance and approach/departure angles

Safe driving techniques

• Hill climbs and descents
• Sand driving
• Mud and loose surfaces
• Choosing safe lines
• Driving at appropriate speeds

Recovery awareness

• Basic recovery principles
• Safe use of recovery points
• Snatch strap safety
• Understanding when not to attempt a recovery

Trip preparation

• Vehicle checks before trips
• Tyre pressures and why they matter
• Essential equipment
• Communications (UHF radio use and etiquette)

How the Programme Works

The DAP is delivered in two parts:

1. Theory Session

A relaxed classroom-style session covering the essential knowledge you need to understand how your vehicle behaves off-road and how to drive safely.

This session is interactive, and you’re encouraged to ask questions and learn from experienced club members.

2. Practical Training Day

A hands-on training day where you apply what you’ve learned in a controlled off-road environment.

You’ll practice real driving scenarios with experienced trainers guiding you every step of the way. There is no pressure, and the focus is on building confidence at your own pace.

Who Should Do the DAP

The DAP is ideal for:

• New 4WD owners
• Members new to off-road driving
• Members new to the club
• Anyone wanting to improve their skills
• Drivers preparing for more challenging trips

Even experienced drivers often learn something new.

A Supportive Learning Environment

One of the biggest benefits of the DAP is the supportive environment. Our trainers are experienced club members who volunteer their time to help others learn.

There is no judgement, no pressure, and no expectation that you already know everything.

Everyone starts somewhere.

What Happens After You Complete the DAP

After completing the DAP, you’ll have the skills and confidence to participate in a wider range of club trips.

You’ll also:

• Feel more confident driving off-road
• Better understand your vehicle
• Be able to help others safely
• Get more enjoyment from your 4WD

Many members say the DAP is the turning point where they truly start enjoying four wheel driving.

More Than Just Training

The DAP isn’t just about learning skills. It’s about becoming part of the club community.

You’ll meet other members, build friendships, and become part of a group that supports and looks out for one another on every trip.

It’s the first step in many great adventures ahead
